A car has hit a horse near Kawerau this morning.

A police spokeswoman said they received reports of a car hitting a horse on Onepu Springs Rd between Thompson Rd and Kawerau Rd about 6.30am.

There were no reported injuries but the car had been damaged, she said.

The spokeswoman said when police arrived the car had left the scene and the animal could not be found.
