Mr Campion said another two-car crash occurred on Cameron Rd at the intersection of Sixth Ave earlier in the day.
A vehicle turning out of Sixth Ave and a car on Cameron Rd collided about 9am. The driver of the vehicle who failed to give way had been issued with an infringement offence notice, he said. A reporter at the scene said it appeared airbags in both vehicles had been deployed and occupants of the cars were out and sitting down on the ground near Burger King.
One person was treated by St John ambulance paramedics.
Mr Campion said the Western Bay of Plenty was over-represented in intersection crashes. "These two particular instances highlight the need for people to take extreme care at intersections and get that gap selection right. Know what the rules are and only pull out when the road is clear."
He asked any witnesses who had not spoken with police to contact them on 07 577 4300.
In another incident, one woman received minor injuries after a two-vehicle crash on the corner of Matai Rd and Totara St about 5.15pm.
About 5.30pm last night a truck crashed in the Mangorewa Gorge, between Rotorua and Tauranga. The driver, who did not want to be named, said he had been travelling from Tauranga to Rotorua when he came around a corner and fishtailed, hitting a bank. He suffered minor injuries, including a gash to the elbow and abrasions.
A witness travelling in the opposite direction said they saw the truck hit the wall and flip on to its side.
