A busy Tauranga road has been closed after a crash which has left power lines across the road.

A car has crashed into a power pole on Fraser St in Parkvale.

The stretch of road between Wembury Grove Hampton Terrace is now closed and power lines are down.

Traffic is heavily backed up and motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible.

Firefighters have blocked the road either side of the crash until power authorities arrive.

It is understood no one has been seriously hurt.
