Iron was ripped from the roof of a Katikati retail store on Sunday night by thieves who broke in and took several labelled caps and left a pile of clothing in the changing room.

Kayla Emery, store manager of Surf, Skate, Snow said several Globe, Lrg and DVS labelled caps were taken from a shelf.

Police said a stocktake had not been done to determine whether other goods were taken.

"A pile of clothing had been gathered up and put in the changing room," Miss Emery said.

Closed circuit TV cameras in the store captured the break-in about 10.30pm.

Katikati Police Senior Constable John Fitzgerald said police believed two offenders entered the store through the roof.

"The intruders have lifted the iron off the roof to gain access to the ceiling space and then smashed through the gib. Once inside, the alarm was activated."

He said the offenders climbed back out through the roof and ran off.

The police carried out a thorough scene investigation and are analysing the results and looking at CCTV footage.
