A big 'thank you' has been made to the volunteers who helped raise money for the Cancer Society. The Waikato/Bay of Plenty Cancer Society is recognising International Volunteer Day on Thursday by acknowledging the efforts of people across the region donating their time to help people affected by cancer. Waikato/Bay of PlentyCancer Society spokesperson Rachael Mounsey said it was grateful for the support of dedicated volunteers. Many people would not think much of a cup of tea and a smile but to someone who is regularly visiting the Waikato Hospital's oncology department for cancer treatment, a friendly face and warm drink can make a huge difference during what is often a very stressful and scary time, she said. Volunteers also assist at the Cancer Society's Lions Lodge, hold support groups in the rural areas of the region, drive clients to and from their appointments for cancer treatment and assist with the Society's fundraising activities. Last year, Cancer Society volunteers drove over 2500 clients to and from their local cancer treatment appointments at Waikato, Rotorua or Tauranga hospitals, and ran over 100 cancer support groups across the Waikato/Bay of Plenty region.
