About two hours later, the crew were called to Black Rd in Paengaroa to put out a fire on a private property. Mr Beech said the farmer was burning rubbish in a pit when the wind caused hot ash to blow out from the fire and cause a sideling or embankment to catch alight. It took the crew about two hours to get it under control.
The fourth call was a medical job where a young boy had fallen off a pushbike.
The volunteers were called out again about 4.40pm to a structure fire on Young Rd in Paengaroa.
When the fire crew arrived, they had to deal with two fires at the same property. Mr Beech said one fire was on the front porch of the property and the other was on a fence line.
He said the fire was suspicious and police were investigating.
The Maketu volunteer brigade deployed two fire trucks and crew. They were there for about an hour and a half.
