Richard Cashmore
A top Tauranga businessman is fighting back after an accident that nearly left him a paraplegic.
Richard Cashmore, managing director of Realty Services Limited, which operates Bayleys and Eves, was badly injured in an accident in the Australian surf, late last year.
The 66-year-old was smashed on to the sea
floor and left temporarily paralysed on November 30.
Eight months on he has made a slow but remarkable recovery.
Mr Cashmore has had two operations and has had to work hard at regaining his mobility - including learning to walk again.
He puts his success down to a positive attitude and determination.
Mr Cashmore, who grew up in Te Aroha, has been in Tauranga since 1980 and has a high profile in and out of business.
He is a former chairman of the Bay of Plenty Rugby Union, former chairman of Bay of Plenty Golf, was on the board of Priority One, and is currently on the board for the Acorn Foundation.
At the time of his accident, Mr Cashmore put a kink in his spinal column and crushed and bruised the nerves in his spinal cord.
He is back at work, and The CatWalk Spinal Cord Injury Trust have described his achievement as "truly phenomenal".
