Tauranga's Bureta Park Motor Inn could be redeveloped on the block adjoining the proposed site of Countdown supermarket.

The possibility that the motor inn could make a sideways shift onto the balance of the land owned by Progressive Enterprises was raised today during the hearing into whether land use consent should be issued to the company to allow the construction of the supermarket.

The company last week advertised for expressions of interest for the 1.4 hectare remainder of the block which was currently occupied by the motor inn and a bottle store.

Progressive's development manager Anthony Dainty said several submitters to the plan were concerned at the potential loss of the motor inn's restaurant and bar as a place for locals to socialise.

Mr Dainty said he was aware that the tenant of the motor inn would be submitting an expression of interest for the balance of the land.

The hearing before two independent commissions continues today and tomorrow with the commissioners expected to reserve their decision.
