Breast cancer support, a great support

Lynley Guise will be walking in the Hot Pink Walk today to support those who have supported her.

The 55-year-old started her journey with breast cancer just over two years ago.

Three weeks after she was diagnosed in 2014 she had an operation to remove the tumour from her right breast. She then underwent chemotherapy and radiation.

A routine mammogram this year showed the cancer had returned so she had a mastectomy to remove the cancer.

Today, dressed in her Boobops T-shirt, spotty stockings, pink beads and fascinator she will take part in the Hot Pink Walk with her teammates from The Boobops Breast Cancer Dragon Boat Team.

Mrs Guise said she did the walk last year.

"I had seen them when I was out fishing and I remember thinking, 'oh they look cool', and then I bumped into them at the walk last year and they basically took me under their wing and the rest is history."

Having since joined the team she now regularly trains with them.

Mrs Guise said the support offered by the BooBops and The Breast Cancer Support Service Tauranga had been amazing through her journey with breast cancer and she wanted to give back.

"It's about supporting everybody going through this journey, or a family who has a member going through it."

Mrs Guise said she had used all of the services offered by The Breast Cancer Support Service.

"They were just there to release all the stress and tears and were there to comfort me and helped me get the right support. They are an amazing group and are there anytime.

"So for me it is important to show them that support back. They mean a lot to the local community and those who are going through it."

Boobops and The Breast Cancer Support Service are holding a fundraising dinner in November and will be splitting the proceeds from the auction 50-50.

The proceeds of the evening will be used to assist local women newly diagnosed with breast cancer and to help with long-term recovery for survivors through dragon boating with the Boobops team.

· The event is being held on November 19 at the ASB Baypark Stadium Lounge - doors opening at 6pm and function starts at 7.00pm.

· The evening includes a dinner and a charity auction with guest speaker Kerre McIvor.
