Waihi Rd's BP owner Shane Eaton and up and coming windsurfer Coral Headey.

The owner of a Tauranga BP station has offered to replace a stolen windsurfing kit which was taken when a string of car thefts targeted petrol stations through the Bay last week.

Tauranga teen Coral Headey had been preparing to compete in the Youth Olympic Games next week but her $3000 windsurfing kit was stolen from her mother's car when she went to fuel up on Friday.

BP Summit owner Shayne Eaton said he did not realise the family were not insured and wanted to do what he could to help make things right.

"I didn't realise the girl's windsurfing kit was in there and she was competing for the New Zealand youth team," he said.

"I didn't want her to miss out.

"She's obviously trained and prepared for this, so I thought 'let's get behind her'."

Police were still investigating the spate of thefts.

After an arrest on Sunday, the Headey's car and one other was recovered by police.
