A 9-year-old boy who suffered serious head injuries after falling off his bike yesterday is in a stable condition in hospital.

He was flown to Starship Children's Hospital earlier today, from Tauranga Hospital's Intensive Care Unit.

A spokesman for Starship said the boy was now in a stable condition, and had been admitted to a ward.

He was riding his bike on a street in Welcome Bay when he fell off around 4pm yesterday.

He sustained serious head injuries and was taken to hospital in a critical condition.
