The North Island championships held on Lake Rotorua was another successful regatta for boardsailors from Tauranga Yacht and Powerboat Club.

They were pleasantly surprised to be greeted with 15 knots of wind as 20 windsurfers hit the water at 10.30am, made up of RS:Xs, Technos, three Konas, two raceboards and two or three greenies.

Four races were sailed back-to-back in sub-planing to planing conditions with both Coral, on the RS:X, and Max, on the Techno, making a clean sweep of things. Olly Maidment toughed it out to complete all four races, which is a huge achievement in itself. The two raceboarders, of which Alex van der Zalm was one, fought it out.

As expected, the wind increased for Sunday but coming from the sou'west meant there were many holes and shifts to contend with so, after three more back-to-back races, it was pleasing to see both Coral Headey and Max van der Zalm holding their leads in their respective fleets. Max was named the Kendall Cup winner as first overall Techno and first under-17 boy.
