Two armed intruders bashed a man as his partner and her children hid in terror during a home invasion that left blood on the walls and stairs in suburban Tauranga.
The attack - which involved a knife, metal bar, screwdriver and threat of a gun - happened in the early hours
of yesterday at an Otumoetai home.
The offenders were this morning still on the loose.
The drama unfolded after the intruders broke in and were confronted on the stairs by the couple living at the Carlton St house. The children watched on in horror.
The mother, who asked for her family not to be identified, said she had just finished cleaning the blood off the walls "and everywhere" from her stairwell when she spoke with the Bay of Plenty Times at her home yesterday.
She was asleep with her partner on the lower level of her Carlton St house while her three children aged 15, 11 and 9 slept upstairs but she and her partner woke to a noise upstairs about 1am.
As she followed her partner to investigate, they clashed with the intruders, who were armed with a screwdriver, knife and metal pipe. One wore a dark green balaclava.
They said: "we are taking your cars".
Her partner said: "no you're not". "It was one big scuffle... they were both fighting him. They had a screwdriver and a knife, and some sort of metal bar," she said.
The woman tried to call police on her cellphone, but it was snatched from her by one of the assailants.
It was then she noticed her children watching from the top of the stairs.
The woman cried out: "My kids, my kids, I want to check on my kids." The attackers let her go and check on them and told her: "We are not here to hurt kids".
They wanted the couple's cars - a Mercedes Benz and BMW.
The woman gathered her children in a bedroom and used her teenage daughter's cellphone to call police.
Her partner was being beaten at the front of the house when she returned.
She cried out: "Help me somebody - call the cops."
"They wouldn't stop hitting him and I couldn't do anything. I basically just started screaming out just to get people to wake up."
One of the offenders then said: "Go get the gun".
The woman yelled that police were on the way, and the men fled.
The men are believed to have broken in having jumped a gate at the rear of the property, which is on a hill slope, and unscrewed a latch to the upstairs laundry's window.
The front door handle was removed and is still missing.
"They knew we were home because my kids seemed to think there was a car across the road watching the house earlier in the night. The lights [from the car] were shining in the bedroom."
The woman said her children were so traumatised by the home invasion, they could not sleep.
Yesterday, they were packing to leave with a relative "to feel safe". It is the teenage girl's 16th birthday today.
Carlton St resident Ruth Carter called police after hearing the commotion.
She said she thought someone was shot dead.
"I was working at my computer and I could hear this shrill female voice. I couldn't figure out what was going on. Then I heard her call out ... So I'm panicking."
Mrs Carter said she then heard two loud cracks.
"It was quiet after that. I thought the guy must be dead."
The woman's partner was not seriously hurt but "pretty roughed up".
Detective Sergeant Eddie Lyttle said police were still looking for the offenders.
Police dogs traced them to a walkway leading into Otumoetai Rd. It is understood a watch possibly belonging to one of the men was found.
Mr Lyttle described the attack as particularly disturbing, as the three children were involved.
"The fact that no serious injuries were inflicted to any is a relief [to the family]," Mr Lyttle said.
HAVE YOU SEEN THEM?
The man with the balaclava also wore a dark hoodie and long dark pants. He was possibly Maori and about 176cm tall.
The second offender has been described as Maori, in his 30s, with a grey hoodie and dark pants at about 182cm.
The two fled down stairs leading from Carlton St to Otumoetai Rd where it is possible they were picked up by a vehicle shortly after 1am.
One of the men might be missing a watch
