There were several minor fires over the weekend in spite of the fire ban:
At Tauriko, a rubbish fire caused a callout at 1.30pm on Saturday. Papamoa volunteer firefighters were called out at 7.20pm to a small fire on Welcome Bay Rd where a man was burning leaves. At 7.34pm
Greerton firefighters were called to extinguish a bonfire in Pyes Pa and at 8.42pm Mount Maunganui firefighters were called to Valley Rd to put out a small fire in an outdoor fireplace. At 9.20pm the Mount Maunganui crew helped douse a small fire on the beach near Waiariki St. On Sunday at 10.30am, firefighters were called to Matapihi Station Rd to a controlled grass fire.
A small rubbish fire at a house in Tahawai was attended by the Katikati Volunteer Fire Brigade yesterday at 4.38pm. A 13 and 14-year-old had lit the fire in their backyard, without the knowledge of their parents, who were very apologetic, firefighters said.
