Crowds gathered at ASB Arena at Baypark on Saturday night to watch one of the first major fireworks display of this year's Guy Fawkes celebrations.

Christian Froehlich captured some of the magic, which lit up Tauranga's skies on Saturday night.

The Baypark Speedway Fireworks Evening followed a family Fireworks Gala at St Mary's School on 13th Avenue on Friday night, where thousands of people gathered for the annual event.

St Johns ambulance staff reported no cases of fireworks related injuries over the weekend and Mount Maunganui firefighters were kept busy on Saturday night and yesterday morning with rubbish fires, attributed to fireworks having gone on sale.

Mount Maunganui Fire Brigade senior station officer Lindsay Nicol said people needed to realise setting fire to rubbish bins could spread to larger, more damaging fires and businesses should store their rubbish away from their property to prevent serious fire. There was no major damage caused in the fires.
