One of the Black Caps' biggest fans Sonny Shaw hopes the Bay Oval will host test cricket.

Mr Shaw watches the Black Caps around the world while wearing a 2001 Black Caps shirt and a stuffed kiwi around his neck and waving a big flag.

He was impressed during his first visit to the Bay Oval.

"This is the sort of venue we need more test matches in. It's a great ground and I like the grassed embankments."

At the beginning of yesterday's game, Mr Shaw thought the Black Caps would be beaten, but in the afternoon, he thought the team were in with a chance of victory. He was pleased with Luke Ronchi and Trent Boult's New Zealand-record 10th-wicket partnership.

While he enjoyed one-day internationals like yesterday's game, Mr Shaw said he enjoyed test cricket the most.

"I really look forward to five days of test cricket. Cricket is a sport that New Zealand isn't a great winner in like the All Blacks, but when they win, they can win some great games."

Mr Shaw is easily recognised by his flag, which was given to him by New Zealand Cricket. He carries a special piece of paper with permission from the national body to bring the flag into any cricket ground in the country.

Next month, he will be taking his flag to the United Arab Emirates to watch the Black Caps play Pakistan - his 100th sporting tour.
