Baywide Rugby: Te Puke ecstatic at win but praise Te Puna

For Te Puke Sports Club president Ash Peat, his rugby team's victory at the weekend was made all the more special by the calibre of their opponents.

Te Puke managed to beat Te Puna in a nail-biter at Saturday's Bayside Rugby Premier 1 final on Te Puke's home ground at Murray Salt Stadium.

"It was probably the biggest day in the club's history," Peat said.

"It was very special and so great to be a part of. It's what grassroots rugby is all about."

Peat was with the Te Puke team yesterday continuing the celebrations. He described the team as "pretty happy".

"They are a great bunch of guys and they got the job done. They are pretty humble and they respect Te Puna, who are also a great little club - sort of a rural club.

"It was special to have them over here."

Peat said the support from the crowd on the day was huge.

"I tell ya, for every Te Puke supporter in the crowd there was at least another Te Puna supporter rocking on.

"They brought an amazing crowd which made for a very special day."
