A barn fire on a Moffat Rd property has so far taken two Tauranga fire crews and a water tanker more than two hours to control.

Tauranga Senior Station Officer Phil Price said fire fighters were called to the fire down a driveway near Tauranga Adventist School about 6pm and were still working to dampen the site at 8pm.

Fire fighters had worked with the farmer to dismantle and remove the end of the barn to access the hay inside, said Mr Price.

He said the roughly 10m by 5m shed was about one-third full of hay which had all been ruined.

He said the fire was not overly dangerous but the process of dismantling the shed required considerable time and effort.

He believed fire fighters would be out there for at least another hour until they had completely dampened the site.
