Tauranga's rescue helicopter was called to assist with back-to-back rescues involving a critically ill man and a car crash which injured nine people.

The Trustpower TECT Rescue Helicopter was called to transport the man, described as critically ill, from Tauranga Hospital to Waikato Hospital for specialist treatment at 1pm yesterday.

Not long after returning to base, the rescue helicopter was called to the Waikato town of Te Hoe following a car crash where nine people were injured.

The rescue helicopter airlifted a 35-year-old woman with serious internal injuries and a 15-year-old man with serious injuries to Waikato Hospital for treatment.

The Waikato Westpac Rescue Helicopter was also called to the scene.
