A sawn-off shotgun and an axe were used in an armed robbery at a Tauranga tavern overnight.

Area investigations manager Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Turner said police were investigating an aggravated robbery of the Judea Tavern about 9.30pm on Sunday.

Mr Turner said two people had entered the tavern on Koromiko St armed with a sawn-off shotgun and an axe and had demanded cash.

"Some of the patrons in the tavern at the time have been spoken to by police," he said.

Anyone who was inside the tavern earlier than 9.30pm on Sunday was urged to contact Tauranga Police on 07 5774300 or Crimestoppers anonymously.
