Tauranga technology company Teamwork.com has been recognised as the official supplier of its project management tool to help people throughout Australasia to start up businesses, says founder Sam Kidd.

The tool has been adopted by the national organisers of New Zealand's and Australia's Startup Weekend communities to help in the launch of hundreds of businesses throughout both countries.

The news comes as Tauranga gets ready to hold its own event this weekend.

"What I've come to believe, through trial and error, is that everyone has ideas," said Mr Kidd. "To be an entrepreneur you don't need unique ideas, you just need to be the one who can execute on an idea."

A project management software company, Teamwork.com's product enables companies to start and scale with ease and keep company communications, documents and projects organised.

Mr Kidd is a supporter of the Startup Weekend concept, in which budding entrepreneurs come together to brainstorm a new business over a weekend. Having sponsored and mentored at more than a dozen events, he understands the process, which has helped tailor the software.

"It's a huge feather in Sam's cap that his project management software has been adopted by the entire New Zealand and Australian Startup Weekend community," said Jo Allum, co-lead organiser for Tauranga Startup Weekend.

"It's proof of the calibre of the Bay of Plenty's local technology entrepreneurs and the quality of their solutions."

Ms Allum said Startup Weekend was a global organisation that had been established as a world-class best-practice method for coming up with ideas, solving problems and creating sustainable, and scalable businesses.

"For Teamwork.com to be chosen by national organisers as the software to enable that process to happen, and the movement of Startup Weekend to scale here in the Southern Hemisphere, is a great testament to the ease of use and adaptability of Sam's software."

Startup weekend was a great experience for people to get started with because it wasn't just about the ideas, but about learning how to take an idea and execute it, said Mr Kidd, who has been working for himself since he left school.

"I really enjoy the challenge of making things happen, connecting with people and the whole discovery period that surrounds creating a business.

"Going into business is about taking on a life of learning how to solve problems for people, and make money. And Startup Weekend is the best and most realistic business development course to learn how to do that, that you could ever attend."
