One person has been seriously injured after a crash on State Highway 2 Whakamarama.

A police spokesman said they were called to the scene about 11.10am near Snodgrass Rd where it appeared one vehicle had gone into a ditch.

A Fire and Emergency NZ spokesman said they had sent three trucks to the scene.

A St John spokeswoman said one person was taken to Tauranga Hospital with serious injuries.

Traffic has built in the area with vehicles bumper to bumper on the highway.
