A man has died while climbing Mauao at Mount Maunganui. Photo / File

An elderly man has died after attempting to climb Mauao in Mount Maunganui.

Emergency services were called to the popular reserve at 11.35am.

A police spokeswoman said an elderly man had suffered a medical event and died while heading up one of Mauao's walking tracks.

The man's death will be referred to the coroner, she said.
