A late-night bite of burnt toast was the catalyst for a kitchen fire in a Gate Pa property last night.

A Fire and Emergency NZ spokeswoman said three fire crews responded to the small fire on Tamworth Pl about 11.30pm.

She said the fire was quickly brought under control and was the result of toast burning in the oven.

A police spokeswoman said all occupants were taken to hospital to be assessed.
