High temperatures, moist air and a week of showers will set Tauranga up for some muggy conditions this week.

MetService meteorologist Andy Best said the area can expect a week of showers that will turn to rain later in the week.

Moist air combined with temperatures around 23 to 25C will likely create "subtropical" conditions for the area, he said.

Tauranga residents can also expect some warm and sticky nights with overnight temperatures sitting around 16 and 18C.

The city will see cloudy conditions today with a few showers here and there.

Winds will pick up this afternoon with a high of 23C.

Northerly winds have created similar airflow around the Bay of Plenty region meaning most of the area will experience cloud cover and showers throughout the week.

The week ahead:

Today: Cloudy with the odd shower. 23 degree high, 17 degrees overnight.
Tomorrow: Cloudy with a few showers. 24 degree high, 18 degrees overnight.
Wednesday: Cloud increasing, showers. 25 degree high, 17 degrees overnight.
