Bay of Plenty fire brigades attended several minor fires overnight, including what appears to have been a deliberately lit car fire in Te Puna, Tauranga.

A Tauranga Fire and Emergency spokesman said the brigade was called to a fully-involved car fire in Tahuna Rd off Te Puna Station Rd about 8.36pm last night.

The Audi car had been dumped and the matter had been referred to the police, he said.

Ōpōtiki, Taupō and Rotorua fire crews also attended a total of five minor fire callouts in their respective districts between 8pm last night and 2am this morning.

This included a structure fire in the Taupō district at 2am but no further information was available.
