A gas leak has been reported in Mount Maunganui.

Firefighters have been called to Wells Avenue, Fire and Emergency northern communications shift manager Paul Radden said.

Firefighters had cordoned off an area around the leak site, which was near a lamp post, and asked the Tauranga City Council not to turn the lights on until it was sorted.

The gas company had also been contacted.
