More than 300 people in Mount Maunganui have been without power since early this morning.

According to Powerco's website there was an unexpected powercut in the Omanu/Mount Maunganui area at 6.31am.

The company's network operations manager Phil Marsh said about 850 customers were affected.

He said it was caused by a fault at Omanu, the cause of which was still being affected.

Power was gradually being returned as each section of the affected area was cleared.

"We have reduced those without supply to a little over 300 and hope to restore full service by late afternoon," he said.

"We apologise for the disruption but we need to complete a thorough check of the network to find the source of the fault before restoring supply."
