New Zealand Defence Force bomb disposal experts have been called to a Te Puke property this evening.

A police spokeswoman said a member of the public notified police at 4.15pm they had found what they described as an "old military shell" on a Dunlop Rd property.

She said it was not clear exactly what the item was, but it was determined that it needed to be "carefully disposed of" so the Defence Force was notified.

They were sending a team from Auckland to decide what to do with the find.
