Two people have been injured in a crash on State Highway 2 near Whakamaramara.

What was initially reported as a three-car crash yesterday, police now believe were two separate crashes in almost the same spot near Apata Station Rd.

A St John Ambulance spokeswoman said two people were taken from the scene to Tauranga Hospital - one in a serious condition and one in a moderate condition.

Police were first called to the area about 1.10pm.

"Two crashes took place within a short space of time at the same location. It appears a ute went off the road, and after that a crash occurred between a car and a truck.

"One elderly person was transported to Tauranga Hospital."
