A crash on the Tauranga Eastern Link is causing traffic mayhem for southbound travellers.

A caller to Coast radio said it looked like a car had hit a barrier. It had blocked the road for a while and traffic was just starting to be let through, the caller said.

Traffic was backed up a long way.

A police media spokeswoman said police had been notified of the crash about 7.50am.

Initial information was that a car had hit a wall on the southbound lane of the road near the Domain Rd offramp.

She said it appeared to be a single car crash and no one was trapped. She was unsure about any injuries.
