A 20–year-old man was stranded at Omanawa Falls overnight after falling down a cliff.
A police media spokeswoman said ambulance staff were unable to reach the man, who had suspected broken bones, due to the location.
Police and a specialist Search and Rescue rope team were called to the falls about 8.30pm last night to assist.
The man was unable to be extracted from the area and the Search and Rescue team, which included a medic, stayed with him overnight, the spokeswoman said.
"A rescue helicopter was due to airlift him out this morning."
The man became injured and stranded after going to Omanawa Falls to go swimming with a friend last night.
"This is a timely reminder to let people know where you are going and what time you are due back," the spokeswoman said.
"Search and Rescue are called to this area on a regular basis, and while it is a beautiful and popular place, it can be dangerous. Remember to always be prepared, let someone know where you are going and take a cellphone with you, as well as warm clothing."
