Police attended an incident last night where a man was being verbally abusive on a Mount Maunganui street.

A police media spokeswoman said police were called to the corner of Banks Ave and Maunganui Rd with a breach of peace report.

"A man was being verbally abusive to a group of people, and said he had a knife."

The incident happened at 8.50pm and no weapon was located, the spokeswoman said.

The man was given a ride by police and removed from the scene.
