An Alverstoke resident, who did not want to be identified said he could see lots of smoke, police cars and fire appliances in the street.
He said the callout was close to the Fraser Street end of the house and members of the public were out on the street watching what was happening.
"There are people out and about," the man said.
"At the moment there's lots of smoke, no flames."
A police media spokeswoman said cordons were in place at the intersection of Alverstoke Rd and Fraser Rd.
The woman said police were originally called to assist fire at 9.30pm.
A St John Ambulance spokesperson said they had been called to the scene but did not need to transport anyone to hospital.
"That indicates it was either a very minor injury or a non-injury (event)"
