Work to build a temporary path around a major slip on the Mauao base track is underway.

Tauranga City Council is building wooden stairs as an interim solution while they work on a plans to permanently reroute the base track along the beach.

The council's parks and recreation manager Mark Smith said the council would let the community know as soon as the steps were done.

"We're expecting to open the steps up within two weeks - sooner if we can manage it."
