Abortions have increased in the Bay, bucking a national trend of fewer terminations.
Last year, 735 Bay of Plenty woman had an abortion, up from 715 in 2015 and from a low of 667 in 2014, according to the latest data from Statistics New Zealand.
The number of teenagers (under 20s) having an abortion has been steadily decreasing every year since 2007, when 247 women in this age group terminated their pregnancies. Last year, the number dropped to 76.
The age group with the largest rise in abortion numbers in the Bay was the 25- to 29-year-olds. In 2015, 186 Bay women in this age group had an abortion, compared with 218 last year - a rise of 14.6 per cent.
The 35 to 39-year-old age group also saw an increase, rising 8.4 per cent from 76 abortions to 83 last year.
