Police have released information about the fatal crash near Te Poi yesterday, saying the car crossed the double yellow centre lines and collided with a bus.

Police were investigating what led the car to cross the centrelines.

The driver, a 54-year-old man, died at the scene.

In a statement Senior Sergeant Andrew BuBear said as far as police investigations could determine, a car travelling west on State Highway 29, near Waiomou Stream Bridge, crossed the centre line and collided with a charter coach going east.

Mr BuBear said it was a tragic incident leaving another family with the loss of a loved one.

"We offer our condolences to all of the family of the driver and all those affected."

The crash, east of Te Poi, happened yesterday at around 11.30am.

The bus was returning cruise ship passengers to their ship docked in Tauranga after a tour of Hobbiton.
