WELL DONE: Tauranga's Bay Twisters' Tornadoes team became national champions last weekend. PHOTO/SUPPLIED

Tauranga's Bay Twisters' Tornadoes are national cheerleading champions for the first time after winning performances at Cheer Factor last weekend.

The senior level three team beat six other clubs during two gruelling days of competition at the ASB Arena in Kohimarama, Auckland.

"It was a long day but the girls love competing and supporting all the other teams from across New Zealand," said Bay Twisters chairperson, Rebecca Grigson.

"It makes it even harder being based over two days. They have to perform on both days with 30 per cent of the score for Saturday and 70 per cent for Sunday.

"Bay Twisters have not been national champions for level three before so it is awesome.

"Also Anna Grigson, aged 13, achieved the top level of cheerleading of level five. She won the junior level five solo so she is the best in New Zealand on her own as well as being part of the Tornadoes as well."

Anyone interested in Bay Twisters is welcome to attend the skills evaluation day on November 26, including current athletes, to assess what teams they would be placed in for 2017.

Two coaches from Auckland are coming to Argos Gym to assess girls and boys. Just turn up and bring $5 to register.
