A French tourist has been rescued after falling over a 50 metre cliff at Omanawa Falls.

The 32-year-old man grabbed a tree 10m from the top, to stop himself falling 40m to rocks below.

The TECT Rescue Helicopter winched the uninjured man down to a St John Paramedic, to put him into a harness and winch him to safety.

A woman in her 60s was also rescued today after she became unwell while walking a tramping track west of Katikati.

The woman was unable to go on, and was winched into the helicopter and flown to a farmhouse near Katikati.
