Gorgeous pug Smurfy Sharma is this year's Pet of the Year winner.

The lovable 9-month-old pooch, who enjoys eating, playing and performing tricks such as shaking hands, giving a high-five and jumping through a hula hoop, won more than 10 per cent of total votes in the competition.

Bay of Plenty Times classified sales manager Tara Childs said 200 entries were received for the popular competition, which meant 80 had to miss out on a space in the paper.

More than 600 votes were received - many from Tauranga and New Zealand, but there were also a number of international votes, presumably from contestants getting their friends and family members overseas to vote.

Votes were received from Santiago, California, Germany, Chile and the United Kingdom, including Worcestershire, Hull and London.

Smurfy will receive a $300 pet food hamper from sponsors Addiction Pet foods.
