Human waste has spilled onto a street in Papamoa.

Fire communications shift manager Karren Larking confirmed human waste from a waste removal truck has spilled onto Batty St in Papamoa.

She said the truck was the kind that empties port-a-loos.

Papamoa Volunteer Fire Brigade was in attendance and had contained the spill.

"They are waiting for council because this type of spill can't be washed down the drain. Council will use a waste truck to uplift it," Ms Larking said.

Greerton and Te Puke fire crews were also heading to the site of the spill, with Greerton bringing along a hazmat crew.

In the meantime, the Papamoa volunteers were keeping the waste spill safe so it would not be a hazard to the public.

"It's on a small side street so it probably wouldn't interfere with any traffic," Ms Larking said.
