Water was cut to 29 properties on 3rd Avenue yesterday after construction damage to a water main. Tauranga City Council spokesman Marcel Currin said the construction damage required an emergency water shutdown at 8.30am, and supply was restored at 11.10am.

Affected properties were on 3rd Avenue between Devonport and Cameron roads.

A spokeswoman from Optionz Brain Rehabilitation & Recovery Trust said it had a full day of appointments planned when she received a knock on the door from the construction site foreman.

"Luckily this happened before our clients started arriving, so we were able to phone and tell them to not come in for a few hours. We can't have people here if we have no water."

Tauranga MP Simon Bridges' electoral office was among the affected properties.

Resident Val Hewitt said she was among the lucky ones who still had water.

Mr Currin said the cause of the damage was yet to be established.
