State Highway 2 through the Karangahake Gorge is closed after a crash between a car and a bus.

A New Zealand Transport Aganey spokeswoman said the highway was closed and a detour was being put in place.

The crash happened about 3.45pm.

Motorists have been asked to avoid the area.
