UPDATED: 1.50pm: A woman swimming at Mount Maunganui had to be rescued after she got into difficulty and started taking on water.

Emergency services were called to Mount Maunganui about 1.05pm today after reports of a woman in difficulty in the water.

Police Northern Communications shift commander Inspector Jason Greenhalgh said a man and woman were swimming when they got into trouble. The man was able to get out on his own but the woman had to be rescued.

"She had taken on quite a bit of water. She was initially given basic CPR but made a full recovery," Mr Greenhalgh said.

"There was some indication she may have hit the rocks which was what caused her to take on some water."

A member of the public pulled her from the water and an off-duty ambulance officer checked on her and put her in the recovery position.

She was already out of the water by the time Surf Lifeguards reached her but they assisted in making sure she was okay.

St John officers called to the scene checked over her also.

A reporter at the scene said someone ran off the Mount Maunganui beach side of the track to ask for help.

Emergency services are responding.
