The Mauao base track was reopened at 11.40am.

Tauranga City Council is asking the public to be aware of trip hazards on the track.

Big waves that caused the track to close have stripped away up to 150mm of the track surface in some areas.

Tauranga City Council communication advisor Marcel Currin said contractors would be smoothing out the affected parts of the track today and resurfacing would be done next week.
