Instagram has named Mount Maunganui the second most popular tourist attraction in New Zealand after Waiheke Island.

Instagram, an online photo-sharing service, ranked the top 10 attractions by the number of photographs loaded to its app geotagged to specific locations.

Tourism Bay of Plenty general manager Rhys Arrowsmith said the ranking reflected the beauty of the area. "The excitement someone feels when they are thrilled to be in a place and take a photo of it and share it reflects the beauty and stunning environment we have here in the Bay. It's exciting news for us as residents to know that we are so well loved by our visitors."
