A Tauranga woman emerged dazed but uninjured after her car plunged down a steep bank above Oropi's Renner Park golf links yesterday.

She was on Waterside Drive approaching the T-intersection with Cheyne Rd when her vehicle mounted the traffic island, smashed over an arrow sign and shot straight across the road.

The woman was the only occupant of the Toyota which rolled 10m down the bank before crashing into native bush.

"She was very lucky to get out without injuries," witness Des Price said. He had just returned home from police volunteer duties in Tauranga's downtown when he saw the car disappear down the bank.

By the time he reached her, other motorists had assisted the driver out of the crashed car and carried her to the top of the bank.

"I made her sit down because she was very dazed and shaken."

Police said it appeared that the woman hit the accelerator instead of the brake when she mounted the traffic island at the intersection.

Mr Price said a car coming up Cheyne Rd from Oropi Rd had to brake to avoid a collision. He described the woman's car as travelling at a moderately low speed when it went down the bank.

Police said a seatbelt saved the driver from injuries. The accident happened about 2.25pm.
