6.14pm: A central Tauranga home has moderate damage to its roof cavity after cooking was left unattended.
Three fire crews were called to the 19th Ave house about 5.20pm for reports of a house fire.
Tauranga Fire Brigade senior station officer Len Sabin said the house was full of smoke when they arrived and the fire had spread up through the extractor fan into the roof.
He said no one was home at the time of the fire and understood the house had no smoke alarms, "which may have alerted the neighbours a bit sooner".
There was minimal damage to the kitchen stove, fan, wall and ceiling but considerable damage in the roof cavity and to the home's wiring, Mr Sabin said.
