UPDATED 6.37pm: A woman has been flown to Waikato Hospital in a serious condition and a man is in Tauranga Hospital with minor injuries tonight after a motorcycle crash.

The pair's motorcycle collided with a traffic light pole at the intersection of Cameron Rd and 15th Ave about 5pm.

The man was driving the motorcycle and the woman was a passenger on the back.

Police said the motorcycle was seen loosing control coming through the intersection before it crashed.

Early indications suggest speed may have been a factor. No other vehicles are thought to be involved.

EARLIER: A man is in a serious condition and a woman has also been taken to hospital after their motorcycle crashed into a traffic light pole at the intersection of Cameron Rd and 15th Ave tonight.

"They somehow lost control in the middle of the intersection, got the speed wobbles and hit the traffic lights."

The pair were travelling west on 15th Ave and hit the traffic light pole between the four traffic lanes, bending the pole and causing the lights to fall from the top on one side.

Police and fire fighters worked to clear spilt fuel and redirect traffic as a section of Cameron Rd outside Tauranga Boys College was closed off.
