Don't be fooled by the balmy weather - a severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for Tauranga.
The Bay of Plenty is one of several regions included in the watch, issued this afternoon.
Daytime cloud buildups are expected to produce scattered heavy showers and thunderstorms about northern and eastern parts of the North Island later today.
These thunderstorm are expected to be slow-moving and have the potential to be severe producing localised downpours of 25-40mm per hour and hail.
Rainfall of this intensity can cause surface and/or flash flooding, especially about low-lying areas such as streams, rivers or narrow valleys, and may also lead to slips.
People in the Bay of Plenty, Northland, Auckland, Coromandel, Waikato, Rotorua, Taupo, Gisborne and the Hawkes Bay should be on the lookout for threatening weather conditions and listen for possible severe thunderstorm warnings.
Today's weather so far has been fine with a high of 25C.
